Convert WebM to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
WebM is a compressed web video format with sound, and GIF is a short, looping image format with no audio track. To convert, open the WebM clip in a converter and export it as GIF. Doing this on your own computer means the clip never has to travel to someone else's server first.

How to convert WebM to GIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM clip you want to convert. Add one file or a whole folder at once.
- Choose GIF as the output format.
- Convert. The GIF is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
WebM vs GIF: what actually changes
| WebM | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Audio | Yes, keeps the sound track | No, GIF has no audio at all |
| Colors per frame | Millions | 256, GIF's built-in limit |
| File size | Smaller for the same length | Often larger, especially for longer or busier clips |
| Loops automatically | No, plays once like a normal video | Yes, this is why GIF is used for memes and animations |
| Opens everywhere | Mostly, but not guaranteed in every app or older tool | Yes, effectively universal support |
| Quality | Good, modern video compression | Lossless within its 256-color palette, but that palette limits how close it looks to the source |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebM to GIF when you want a short clip to autoplay and loop somewhere that doesn't support video files, like a chat thread, forum post, or a place that only accepts images.
Keep the WebM if you need the sound, a longer runtime, or the full color range, since converting to GIF drops audio entirely and can make longer clips surprisingly large.
Why not just use an online converter?
WebM clips are often screen recordings or personal video, the kind of thing you don't necessarily want sitting on a stranger's server just to change its format. An online converter has to receive your whole clip before it can hand back a GIF. Converting on your own computer skips that step, the video never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting WebM to GIF lose quality?
Yes, in a specific way. GIF caps every frame at 256 colors, so gradients and detail get flattened compared to the original video, even though the conversion itself is lossless within that limit.
Will the GIF keep the audio from my WebM clip?
No. GIF has no audio track at all, so any sound in the original is simply dropped. If you need the sound, keep the WebM.
Why is my GIF file bigger than the WebM it came from?
Video formats like WebM compress motion between frames, but GIF mostly doesn't. A longer or higher-resolution clip can turn into a much larger GIF than you'd expect.
Can I convert WebM to GIF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so the clip stays on your computer the entire time, even with your wifi off.
Will the GIF loop the way I expect?
Yes, GIF is built to loop automatically once it's playing, which is exactly why it's the standard format for short memes and reaction clips.
Morphjet converts WebM, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
