Convert WebM to MOV
Updated Jul 2026
WebM is the video format most browsers use for streaming and screen recordings, while MOV is what Mac and iPhone apps expect. To convert WebM to MOV, open the file in a converter and export it as MOV. Doing this on your own computer means the video, screen recording, or clip never has to leave your machine.

How to convert WebM to MOV
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM file you want to convert. Add one clip or a whole folder at once.
- Choose MOV as the output format.
- Convert. The MOV is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
WebM vs MOV: what actually changes
| WebM | MOV | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens in web browsers | Yes, native web format | Inconsistent, depends on the browser |
| Opens in Mac and iPhone apps | Rarely without extra software | Yes, native to QuickTime, iMovie, and Final Cut |
| File size | Smaller, efficient web compression | Often larger, depending on the codec used |
| Quality | Lossy | Lossy, with a small extra loss from re-encoding |
| Audio codec support | Vorbis or Opus, not read by most Mac editors | AAC, expected by Mac and iPhone software |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebM to MOV when you've downloaded or screen-recorded a WebM clip and need to edit it in iMovie or Final Cut, or send it to someone on a Mac or iPhone who can't open it directly.
Keep the WebM if it's only ever going to play in a browser, since that's the format the web already handles natively, and converting adds another lossy pass for no real benefit.
Why not just use an online converter?
Screen recordings and downloaded clips saved as WebM often contain things you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server, whether that's a private call, a work screen, or footage you don't have full rights to redistribute. An online converter uploads the whole file before it can give you a MOV back. Converting on your own computer keeps the video where it started.
Questions
Does converting WebM to MOV lose quality?
A little. WebM is already compressed, and converting to MOV re-encodes the video, which adds a small extra generation of loss on top. It's usually not visible for normal viewing or editing.
Will the MOV file play on Windows?
Not always without extra codecs installed. MOV is built around what Apple's software expects, so it's most reliable on Mac and iPhone, and less consistent on Windows and in web browsers.
Why would I have a WebM file in the first place?
WebM shows up most often from screen recordings, browser extensions that save streamed video, or clips downloaded from the web, since it's a common format for that.
Can I convert WebM to MOV without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Does the audio stay in sync after converting?
Yes. Converting to MOV also re-encodes the audio track (typically to AAC) alongside the video, and the two stay matched up in the process.
Morphjet converts WebM, MOV, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
