Video conversion

Convert WebM to MPEG

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WebM is a compact video format built for playing in web browsers, while MPEG is the older format that DVD players, broadcast equipment, and many editing systems still expect. To convert WebM to MPEG, open the file in a converter and export it as MPEG. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere to get converted.

How to convert WebM to MPEG

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to convert.
  2. Choose MPEG as the output format.
  3. Convert. The MPEG file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WebM to MPEG when you need to burn a video to DVD, hand it off to broadcast or older editing equipment, or open it on hardware that doesn't recognize web video formats.

Keep the WebM original if the video is only ever going to be played in a browser, since WebM is smaller and MPEG conversion just adds file size without adding anything useful.

Why not just use an online converter?

Online video converters work by uploading your file to their servers, processing it there, and sending it back, which means a copy of your video sits on a stranger's machine, at least for a while. Converting WebM to MPEG on your own computer skips that step entirely. The video stays on your machine the whole time, whether it's a screen recording, a clip from a meeting, or anything else you'd rather not send elsewhere.

Questions

Does converting WebM to MPEG lose quality?

There's usually a small quality change because MPEG re-encodes the video during export, but at a reasonable bitrate it's hard to notice. If you need a visually identical copy, keep the WebM as your master.

Will an MPEG file play on more devices than WebM?

For older and non-web hardware, yes. DVD players, broadcast systems, and many legacy editing programs handle MPEG but not WebM, which is really a browser-focused format.

Is MPEG a bigger file than WebM?

Usually. WebM's compression is more efficient for the same visual quality, so converting to MPEG typically increases file size, sometimes substantially.

Can I convert WebM to MPEG without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file directly on your computer, so it never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off if you want to be sure.

Why would I need MPEG instead of just keeping WebM?

Mostly for compatibility with older or specialized systems, like a DVD authoring tool or a broadcast workflow, that were built around MPEG long before web video formats existed.
