Convert MOV to WebM
Updated Jul 2026
MOV is the video format iPhones and Macs record in, and WebM is the compact format built for playing video directly in a web browser. To convert MOV to WebM, open the file in a converter and re-encode it. Doing this on your own computer means the video, and everything embedded in it, never has to leave your machine.

How to convert MOV to WebM
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MOV file you want to convert, or a whole folder of clips at once.
- Choose WebM as the output format.
- Convert. The WebM file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
MOV vs WebM: what actually changes
| MOV | WebM | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Larger, especially at high resolution or bitrate | Smaller, built for efficient web delivery |
| Quality | High, often close to the original recording | Good, but re-encoding to WebM is a fresh, lossy compression pass |
| Plays in web browsers | Not reliably, many browsers can't play it directly | Yes, built for HTML5 video playback |
| Opens in QuickTime, Photos, Final Cut | Yes, native Apple format | No, needs a separate player or a browser |
| Editing software support | Widely supported by video editors | Limited, fewer editors accept it directly |
| Keeps recording date and location | Yes, often includes GPS and creation date | No, this metadata is usually dropped on conversion |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MOV to WebM when you need to embed a video on a website, post it somewhere that expects HTML5 video, or send a smaller file that plays without extra software.
Keep the MOV original if you plan to edit the footage further, since re-encoding to WebM is a lossy step you can't undo.
Why not just use an online converter?
Video recorded on an iPhone or Mac can carry the date, time, and GPS location of where it was filmed, the same way photos do. Uploading that MOV to an online converter hands that footage, and where it was shot, to someone else's server. Converting on your own computer keeps the video, and everything tied to it, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting MOV to WebM lose quality?
Yes, a little. WebM uses its own compression, so turning a MOV into WebM is a fresh lossy encode. For web playback the difference is usually not noticeable, but it isn't reversible.
Will WebM keep the video's recording date and location?
Usually not. Most of the metadata embedded in an iPhone or Mac recording, including GPS location, doesn't carry over to WebM. If that matters to you, keep the original MOV as your record.
Why convert MOV to WebM instead of just uploading the MOV?
Many websites and browsers can't play MOV directly, or play it inconsistently. WebM was built specifically for browser video, so it loads faster and works predictably wherever HTML5 video is expected.
Can I convert MOV to WebM without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the video on your own computer, so it never has to travel over the internet. You could disconnect from wifi and it would still work.
Morphjet converts MOV, WebM, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
