Convert WebM to WAV

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WebM is a video container used on the web, and WAV is an uncompressed audio format used for editing and playback everywhere. To convert WebM to WAV, open the file in a converter, pull out the audio track, and save it as WAV. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere just to get its sound.

How to convert WebM to WAV

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM file or a whole folder of them.
  2. Choose WAV as the output format. Morphjet pulls the audio track out of the video automatically.
  3. Convert. The WAV file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

WebM vs WAV: what actually changes

WebMWAV
Contains videoYesNo, audio only
File sizeSmaller, video and audio compressed togetherMuch larger, audio stored uncompressed
Audio qualityLossy, compressed when recordedLossless from this point on, but can't restore detail already lost in the WebM
Opens everywhereMostly web browsers and video playersYes, virtually all audio software and hardware
Good for editing audioAwkward, tools expect an audio-only fileYes, the standard format for audio editing

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WebM to WAV when you need just the sound from a recording, screen capture, or web video, and you want it in a format your audio editor, DAW, or transcription software can open directly.

Keep the WebM if you still need the picture, since converting to WAV throws the video away for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

Screen recordings and web video captures often carry more than you'd expect, meetings, voices, whatever was on screen when you hit record. Uploading one to an online converter just to grab the audio means a stranger's server sees the whole file. Converting on your own computer keeps the recording, and whatever's in it, on your machine the entire time.

Questions

Does converting WebM to WAV improve the audio quality?

No. WAV stores audio uncompressed from that point forward, but it can't add back detail that was already lost when the audio was compressed inside the WebM. It stops further quality loss, it doesn't undo it.

Will I still have the video after converting to WAV?

No. WAV is an audio-only format, so the picture is dropped and only the sound is kept. Keep the original WebM if you might need the video later.

Why is the WAV file so much bigger than the WebM?

WebM compresses both video and audio to keep files small for the web. WAV stores audio uncompressed, so even just the sound from a short clip can end up larger than the whole original video.

Can I convert WebM to WAV without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the video and its audio never travel over the internet. It works with your wifi off.

Does the audio stay in sync after converting?

Yes. Pulling the audio track out and saving it as WAV doesn't change its timing, so it will still line up with the original video if you need to reference both.
